First Evacuees from South Africa to Touch Down in Lagos Thursday
The first group of Nigerians fleeing recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa will land at Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed International Airport on Thursday, June 11. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an Air Peace flight will depart Johannesburg on Wednesday night and arrive by 5 am. The federal government is fully funding the evacuation. Reception and support services are in place for returnees. On arrival, evacuees will undergo documentation and profiling before reuniting with their families. The flight was rescheduled from Monday to Wednesday due to unforeseen logistical issues. More than 1,000 Nigerians in South Africa have registered for repatriation.
