State Police: Nigeria’s Best Defense Against Banditry
Banditry has spread from the forests of Borno to farmlands across the country. These well-armed groups use military-style tactics—raids, kidnappings, cattle rustling and extortion—exploiting poverty, weak governance and porous borders. It’s time for governors of all parties to unite and demand the creation of state police. Locally commanded forces know their terrain and communities best. A clear framework and robust oversight can prevent abuse while restoring security. While legislation is underway, states should immediately form hybrid security task forces. Pair military personnel with trusted community volunteers. Equip them, train them and place them under governor-led command for full coverage. Banditry is not unsolvable. If governors act now, they can protect Nigerians and reclaim our lands. What do you think—should our leaders take these steps? Let the discussion begin.
