Nigerian Man Sentenced in US for Visa and Identity Fraud
A US district judge has handed down a sentence to 32-year-old Atuchukwu Markrufus Onyeanusi for fraud and misuse of identification documents. He received time served of just under six months, one year of supervised release, a $1,000 fine, and a $100 assessment to the federal victims fund. Onyeanusi pleaded guilty in February 2026 to using a false Texas commercial driver’s licence, a fake Social Security card, and an employer ID under another person’s name. He used these documents to secure employment as a cyber threat analyst in South Dakota and falsely claimed US citizenship on immigration forms. The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative targeting illegal immigration and transnational criminal organisations. Homeland Security Investigations and the Craig County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation, with prosecution led by the US Attorney’s office.
