FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried Petitions Trump for Pardon
Sam Bankman-Fried, the creator of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange, has formally requested a pardon from former US President Donald Trump. The filing appears as “pending” on the Department of Justice’s Pardon Attorney registry. In a January interview with a major US newspaper, Mr. Trump said he did not plan to grant clemency to the 34-year-old entrepreneur. Bankman-Fried rose to billionaire status before 30 and helped build FTX into the world’s second-largest crypto trading platform. FTX collapsed in November 2022 amid a rush of withdrawals and revelations that billions were diverted from customer accounts to Bankman-Fried’s hedge fund, Alameda Research. He was convicted in New York last November on seven counts of fraud, embezzlement and conspiracy, and has since appealed his conviction and 25-year sentence.
