Senate urges FG to ban imported textiles to revive Nigerian cotton industry
The Senate has called on the Federal Government to ban all imported textile materials. Lawmakers say this move will boost local cotton production and bring dormant textile mills back to life. They urged the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade and Investment to collaborate on restoring the textile sector. Senators believe reviving these industries will create jobs, curb youth restlessness, and reduce related security risks. The upper chamber also recommended that the Bank of Industry receive additional funding dedicated to textiles. They emphasized that without a strong cotton farming base, the industry cannot recover. These resolutions came after a motion on reviving textile industries along the Kaduna-Kano axis, sponsored by Senator Sunday Marshall Katung and co-sponsored by colleagues from various states.
