Air Peace to Fly First 270 Nigerians Home from South Africa after Xenophobic Attacks
The first batch of 270 Nigerians fleeing xenophobic violence in South Africa will arrive at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos at 5am on Thursday. The Air Peace flight departs Johannesburg on Wednesday night. The federal government has fully funded the repatriation. Upon arrival, evacuees will go through documentation, profiling and receive support before reuniting with their families. Originally scheduled for Monday, the flight was postponed due to logistical challenges and ongoing screening with South African authorities. Over 1,000 Nigerians have completed the screening process and numbers are rising. Nigeria’s high commission negotiated waivers to allow those with immigration-related offences to leave on repatriation flights rather than face detention. The exercise is coordinated by NEMA and other agencies.
