Communities Call for Stronger Reproductive Health Policies in Lagos
The Leadership Initiative for Youth Empowerment brought together healthcare workers, community and religious leaders, state health officials, and youth representatives in Oshodi-Isolo to demand improved access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services. Participants discussed challenges such as stigma, cultural norms, financial barriers, and lack of awareness that limit women’s and girls’ ability to seek professional care. The forum highlighted the need to reinstate and implement the Safe Termination of Pregnancy Guideline to allow women in legally permissible circumstances safe, non-discriminatory access to care. Stakeholders recommended sustained public awareness campaigns, community sensitization, and engagement with traditional and faith leaders to normalize discussions around reproductive rights. Participants urged the formation of local advocacy groups and safe spaces for survivors of sexual violence to share experiences without fear of judgment. The meeting closed with a commitment to ongoing community engagement and policy advocacy to safeguard the health and rights of women and girls across Lagos State.
