Is Gambling a Sin? What the Bible Really Says

Many Christians wonder if gambling conflicts with Scripture. In short, the Bible warns against the attitudes behind it, such as covetousness, greed and quick gain. Covetousness is condemned in Exodus 20:17 and Jesus warned against it in Luke 12:15. Gambling fuels the desire for what God has not provided. The pursuit of easy wealth echoes the warning in 1 Timothy 6:9–10 that “the love of money is the root of all evil.” Proverbs also warns that wealth gained hastily will dwindle (Proverbs 13:11) and that those who rush to be rich “have an evil eye” (Proverbs 28:20, 22). In trusting chance over God’s provision, gambling embraces a spirit the Bible clearly condemns.
