INEC Appeals Conflicting Court Rulings to Harmonise 2027 Election Timetable
The Independent National Electoral Commission has approached the Court of Appeal to challenge two recent Federal High Court judgments that delivered opposing views on its power to set timelines for the 2027 general elections. INEC chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan said the commission respects all judicial decisions but needs clear legal authority to coordinate interlinked electoral processes. He cited one suit by the Youth Party and another (FHC/ABJ/CS/720/2026) where certain nomination deadlines were nullified. To avoid administrative chaos and promote transparency, INEC has filed appeals and will issue access codes on June 26 for parties to use its candidate nomination portal. The commission also urged parties to intensify voter education during ongoing continuous voter registration and resolve internal leadership disputes swiftly, as it remains committed to free and fair elections under the Constitution, the Electoral Act and all lawful court pronouncements.
