Armed Bandits Kidnap 39 Elders During Peace Mission in Zamfara
At least 39 residents of Magamin Diddi village in Maradun LGA, Zamfara State, were abducted by armed bandits during a reconciliation meeting on June 7. The victims, mostly community elders, had travelled to Fadama Forest seeking peace talks with a notorious gang leader known as Smally. The Maradun council chairman confirmed the incident and said villagers organised the meeting without local government approval. He noted that the state government has consistently opposed direct negotiations with bandits, even though security escorts have been provided for community movements. Some abducted persons were later released to inform the community of the attack. The Zamfara State Police Command has launched a rescue operation, deploying operational assets and following intelligence leads to secure the remaining captives. The police assured the public that every effort is being made to rescue the victims unharmed and bring the perpetrators to justice.
