FG Backs CNG Drive to Boost Cleaner, Affordable Transport

FG Backs CNG Drive to Boost Cleaner, Affordable Transport

Nigeria’s push for a cleaner, more affordable transport sector gained momentum when the National Compressed Natural Gas Forum met with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. They reviewed plans to roll out President Tinubu’s energy reforms, with a focus on compressed natural gas and electric vehicles. Forum leaders applauded recent policies aimed at cutting rising transport costs and urged a shift from policy to rapid implementation. They called for streamlined conversion services, higher safety standards, and stronger support for local manufacturing of CNG equipment. Key recommendations included establishing a National CNG Stakeholder Coordination Framework, forming an inter-ministerial committee on gas mobility and alternative fuels, and creating a dedicated CNG Development Fund. The Federal Government welcomed these proposals and pledged to evaluate them for formal policy action. Stakeholders agreed that expanding infrastructure, reinforcing regulations, and keeping CNG accessible and affordable are critical to the success of Nigeria’s transition to cleaner transport fuels.

I get the cleaner transport goal, but won't upfront costs for retrofitting vehicles scare off most transporters initially?

A phased rollout starting with major cities and incentives for CNG kit installers could encourage faster adoption.
