ECOWAS Parliament Targets 48% Renewables to Expand Electricity Access in West Africa

ECOWAS Parliament Targets 48% Renewables to Expand Electricity Access in West Africa

The ECOWAS Parliament has launched an initiative to extend reliable and affordable electricity across West African communities. During a joint committee meeting in Dakar, lawmakers highlighted plans to boost the share of renewable energy to 48 percent by 2030. With more than 190 million people still lacking power and rural electrification at just 12 percent, outdated grids and distribution losses of up to 40 percent hinder growth. New policies on energy, renewables, and efficiency aim to reverse these trends. Regional bodies such as ECREEE, ERERA and the West African Power Pool will work together on infrastructure, capacity building, and resource mobilization. The goal is to light homes, power health centres and schools after dark, and drive rural economic development through sustainable energy solutions.

While boosting renewables sounds promising, don't forget grid maintenance and local distribution challenges could stall actual progress.

Local communities should explore mini-grid partnerships and solar microfinance models to complement ECOWAS plans for more reliable power access.
