Presidency Fires Back at Makinde: Fix Oyo’s Security Gaps Before Pushing State Police
The Presidency has challenged Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde after he accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of stalling on state police. A statement from the President’s Special Adviser on Social Media pushed back on Makinde’s claims. At a party primary in Ibadan, Makinde argued that states can create police forces through local legislation. He cited the South-west’s Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, as a successful example of this approach. The presidential aide accused Makinde of deflecting attention from rising insecurity and funding shortfalls in Oyo State. He highlighted how underfunded Amotekun operatives, armed with pump-action rifles, face armed syndicates without adequate support. The Presidency insists Oyo must properly equip and fund its regional security outfit before calling for a full state police. Until then, they say, Makinde’s criticism lacks credibility.
