Ron Woodroof: The Maverick Who Launched the Dallas Buyers Club
Ronald Dickson Woodroof was diagnosed with HIV in 1985 and given just 30 days to live. Frustrated by limited treatment options, he founded the Dallas Buyers Club in 1988 to import and share unapproved therapies with other patients. Born in Dallas on February 3, 1950, Woodroof married three times and was known for his outspoken personality. Despite early misconceptions about his views, he was openly bisexual and joined the Dallas Gay Alliance after his diagnosis. Woodroof took legal action against the FDA over its ban on peptide T, arguing that patients deserved access to experimental drugs. His fight for treatment inspired the 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club, in which Matthew McConaughey won an Academy Award for portraying him. Woodroof survived seven years beyond his initial prognosis but died of AIDS-related pneumonia on September 12, 1992, aged 42. His legacy lives on as a catalyst for patient rights and broader access to experimental treatments.
