Children’s Day of Mourning: Demand Justice for Kidnapped Students
As Nigeria marks Children’s Day, our hearts are heavy. Recent kidnappings in Ogbomosho and the killing of a teacher have turned a celebration into a day of grief and fear. Schools should be safe havens for learning. Instead, children face trauma and uncertainty. This Children’s Day must be a moment of reflection and urgent action. We call on the National Union of Teachers, the Ministry of Education, civil society groups, religious bodies, and all Nigerians to observe a “Red Children’s Day” of mourning. We demand the rescue of kidnapped students, the prosecution of perpetrators, and strengthened security around schools. The government must protect children, teachers, and communities. Now is the time for decisive measures against banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping. Our future generation deserves safety and peace of mind.
