Senate Probes 79% Board Allowance Spend at North West Development Commission

The Senate Committee on Regional Development is questioning the North West Development Commission’s spending. Lawmakers say nearly 79 percent of the N1.19 billion budget—about N943 million—went to board allowances. They also noted the commission has had no executive directors or employees since its launch in February 2025. The ministry, board and managing director told the committee about challenges affecting operations. I am disgusted by this lack of clarity from all six regional development commissions. I don’t know their core mandate or how many projects they have completed. It’s even more exasperating that the supervising ministry seems almost non-existent.

What impact do you think this 79 percent board allowance spend will have on actual development in the North West Commission?

It seems unlikely such a large slice of N1.19 billion goes solely to board allowances without clear project outcomes attached.

The commission should publish a detailed breakdown of board allowances and fill executive director roles to enhance accountability and speed up development.
