Tinubu Commissions Four CNG Projects in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri to Boost Clean Transport
President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated four major compressed natural gas (CNG) facilities across Lagos, Abuja and Owerri under the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF). The move is part of his administration’s drive to expand clean transport infrastructure and deepen domestic gas utilisation. Key installations include the 96,000-standard cubic metre Portland Gas CNG Mother Station at Ojota, an Ibile Oil and Gas Corporation refuelling hub in Lagos, and a high-capacity CNG Daughter Booster Station in Abuja. Each facility features advanced compressors, storage systems and dispensing units capable of serving up to 1,000 vehicles daily, alongside vehicle conversion centres for cars and tricycles. At the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, the president also unveiled a CNG Daughter Station under the SPROUT programme, aimed at establishing gas ecosystems in 20 universities with CNG-powered buses, tricycles and training centres. The Federal Government has partnered with lenders through the CALM Fund to provide affordable financing for vehicle conversions to CNG. Speaking during the virtual inauguration, Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria’s energy future would be built on its abundant gas resources. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) and MDGIF executives praised the collaboration between government bodies, investors and technical partners in driving sustainable development.
