South African Court Deports Mugabe’s Son After Gardener Shooting Case
A South African court has fined Bellarmine Mugabe, youngest son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, and ordered his deportation over a shooting incident. Mugabe pleaded guilty to being in South Africa illegally and pointing a toy gun during a separate dispute. He was arrested in February alongside his cousin, Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze, who admitted attempted murder and related charges. The court imposed a 600,000 rand fine or 24 months’ imprisonment on Bellarmine, followed by immediate deportation upon serving any sentence. Matonhodze received concurrent prison terms of up to three years after the gardener victim was compensated. Investigators said 250,000 rand was paid in cash and 150,000 rand promised, but the firearm remains unrecovered. Bellarmine Mugabe is known for a lavish lifestyle in Johannesburg. His father ruled Zimbabwe for nearly four decades before his 2017 ouster and died in 2019.
