Daniel Kanu: From Abacha’s Youth Campaigner to Private Citizen
Daniel Kanu rose to prominence in the 1990s under General Sani Abacha. He led the Youth Earnestly Ask for Abacha (YEAA) campaign and organised large rallies urging Abacha to transition from military rule to civilian leadership. After Abacha’s sudden death in 1998, Kanu’s influence collapsed. He was arrested in the early 2000s on financial fraud and illegal banking charges. He served several years in prison and then largely faded from the public eye. Upon his release, Kanu did not return to national politics. Very little is known about his current activities and he seems to be living privately away from the spotlight. I shared this to remind us that political sycophancy rarely ends well. Power is temporary, truth endures. Why else would anyone back Abacha? Make we wise up. Do you have light in your area?
