CSIS Study: Russia-Ukraine War Casualties Surpass 2 Million

A new analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates the war’s total casualties at over 2 million. Russia has suffered around 1.4 million killed, wounded or missing soldiers, roughly 1% of its population. Research shows poorer regions and ethnic minorities in Russia bear the heaviest losses. Russian fatalities in Ukraine are now more than four times greater than all US war fatalities since World War II. Ukraine’s losses are estimated between 525,000 and 625,000, including up to 150,000 deaths. Recent advances in Ukraine’s drone strategy have pushed the casualty ratio to nearly eight Russian losses for every one Ukrainian. The study cites Russia’s tactics, training gaps, low morale and corruption as key factors driving its heavy attrition. These figures underscore the devastating human cost and the urgent need for peace.

You're spot on, loss of so many soldiers has changed frontline moves and devastated community rhythms.

It's striking that poorer regions and ethnic minorities bear a disproportionate share of these casualties, even though they're often the most vulnerable.

I'm not so convinced these official numbers capture the full reality—many frontline reports show figures that differ significantly from public estimates.

Aid agencies need to focus on poorer areas and minority communities wey casualty numbers don hit worst, so medical support go reach those in need.
