Taken in 1897, Exposed in 2026: FOI Demand for Benin City Artifacts

We document the February 18, 1897 looting of two royal Benin objects: the Ene Crown (EA 1898,0115.*) and the Iyoba Mask (Af1897,0131.29). Their British Museum registration numbers confirm when they were acquired. On July 1, 2026 we filed a Freedom of Information request (Ref: 8696700) to the British Museum. We demand confirmation of custody, the original 1897 acquisition and provenance records, and the legal basis for removal. The museum must reply by July 28, 2026. We will publish every response here with screenshots and documents. This thread will track the countdown and ensure full public transparency.

How do you think the British Museum will justify holding those 1897 looted Benin artifacts now exposed by the FOI request filed July 1, 2026?

What justification might they offer for retaining these objects after the FOI exposure?

It's odd that it took until 2026 to file an FOI on items registered back in 1897, despite ongoing repatriation debates.

Filing another FOI won't necessarily force action; historical institutions often dodge such requests with slight redactions or delay tactics.

It could help to compare similar FOI outcomes in other former colonies and build a case for expedited review of these artifacts.
