US Rights Lawyer Alleges Kano Commissioner’s Complicity in 13-Year-Old Orphan’s Death

US Rights Lawyer Alleges Kano Commissioner’s Complicity in 13-Year-Old Orphan’s Death

US-based human rights lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe and cleric Dr William Delvin held a press briefing in Abuja. They say the Kano government illegally seized children from Du Merci orphanage in 2019 and has refused to return all of them despite a court order. They accuse the state’s Women Affairs Commissioner, Hajiya Amina Sani Abdullahi, of negligence that led to the death of 13-year-old David Tarfa in government custody on January 28. His body has not been released for an autopsy. A March 2025 consent judgment ordered that 18 children be returned to Du Merci. Only some were handed over. The remaining seven minors are still in state care in defiance of the court. Ogebe and Delvin are calling for immediate compliance with the court order. They question why an NGO with a 32-year track record in Kano can’t care for these orphans better than the ministry.

How could a state government refuse to return children after a court order, and what might motivate such an alleged cover-up?

Right, it's shocking a government could ignore a court order like that. Something's definitely off, and full transparency is needed.

It sounds harsh to call it cover-up. Maybe it's just bureaucratic lag or safety review holding things up.

It's striking that these allegations come from a US-based lawyer and cleric, raising questions about evidence presented in Abuja's press briefing.

It seems premature to condemn the Kano government outright without clarity on why court orders weren't enforced locally or who held real authority.

Advocates should push for independent monitoring at Du Merci orphanage and demand transparent updates to ensure all children return safely.
