Taiwan Police Seize Over $300 Million in Illegal World Cup Bets

Taiwan Police Seize Over $300 Million in Illegal World Cup Bets

Taiwan authorities have dismantled an illegal online betting ring and confiscated more than US$300 million in World Cup wagers. Officers in the southern city of Tainan raided a five-storey building on July 1. They arrested eight suspects and seized computers, mobile phones, ledgers and large sums of cash. Five of those arrested had traveled from Hong Kong and Macau on tourist visas to place bets. Police say the operation handled nearly NT$10 billion in wagers and had rented the property for the entire tournament period. The Tainan City Police Department released details of the bust this week, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb illegal gambling networks (source: AFP).
