Why Peter Obi’s Call for Fairness Won Over Nenadi Usman

Why Peter Obi’s Call for Fairness Won Over Nenadi Usman

Nenadi Usman, National Chairman of the Labour Party, has revealed how Peter Obi’s vision of fairness and equity persuaded her to leave the PDP ahead of the 2023 elections. She said Obi’s message resonated with many politicians who felt the decision not to zone the presidential ticket to the South was unjust. Although she is from the North, Usman believed that fair power rotation mattered for all Nigerians. Usman added that most who joined the Labour Party at the time did so because they identified with its principles of justice, inclusion and equal opportunity. Looking ahead, she noted that strict Electoral Act timelines may complicate late entries. The party now plans to refocus on its founding ideals of social justice and equal opportunity.

It's interesting that a zoning disagreement could outweigh long-standing party loyalty for a veteran like Nenadi Usman.

I'm not sure fairness alone drove her decision; politicians often switch parties for influence or future appointments.

Parties should outline transparent zoning agreements to align members and avoid losing key figures like Usman.
