When Empowerment Becomes a Joke: Red Panties, Diapers and Detergent in Kano Politics

Kano politicians traded serious empowerment for gimmicks, claiming red underwear, diapers and single sachets of detergent would uplift women. Such acts only expose a lack of dedication and undermine public trust. The now-debunked red-panties stunt saw the governor’s face superimposed on women’s briefs, all in the name of empowerment. Even though the governor condemned the display, the episode raises urgent questions about political advisers who choose ridicule over real solutions. Meanwhile, local council chairmen handed out detergent sachets and baby kits to 500 women each, while a modern skills centre funded by government and private partners remains shut. Nigerians deserve sustainable programmes, not publicity stunts that insult our intelligence.
