Peter Obi Highlights Diaspora’s Role in Africa’s Development at Mandela Hall, New York
I had the honour of delivering the keynote address at Mandela Hall in New York on “The Role of the Diaspora African in Sustainable Development across Africa.” Africa boasts immense resources and the world’s largest youthful workforce. Yet despite vast arable land and mineral wealth, the continent still bears the greatest burden of extreme poverty. Nearly one in three Africans live in extreme poverty today. The missing link is competent leadership with capacity, character, compassion and commitment. Diaspora Africans must use their voices and experiences in functional democracies to push for good governance. History shows that Japan, China and India all benefited from their global communities returning home with skills to drive economic transformation. Now is the time for those abroad and at home to collaborate, foster credible elections and create an environment that attracts talent and investment. Together, we can unlock Africa’s potential and build a continent defined by unity, peace and shared prosperity.
