Why NFVCB Boss Shaibu Husseini Champions Ritual- and Smoke-Free Nollywood

Dr Shaibu Husseini heads the National Film and Video Censors Board after a career as a film and culture journalist. He holds a PhD in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos specializing in Nollywood studies. Since taking office, he has pushed for major board reforms and better film production data to draw investors into the industry. He believes accurate statistics will fuel growth and boost Nigeria’s movie exports. Husseini is also working to sanitize Nollywood by banning glamorised money rituals and on–screen smoking. He argues such portrayals harm Nigeria’s image and mislead audiences. He further supports amending the NFVCB Act to strengthen the board’s regulatory powers and improve its funding. These changes aim to make the board more effective and transparent.
