Accused Kano Lawyer Issues Threat to Journalist in Certificate Scandal

Accused Kano Lawyer Issues Threat to Journalist in Certificate Scandal

A new controversy has erupted in Kano State after journalist Tom Garba reported on a certificate scandal involving lawyer Bako Yunusa Gambo. Garba says he received messages he viewed as threats, such as “Don’t worry, you will hear from us” and “Find out the outcome of the police report.” He maintains he was simply covering legal proceedings in a high-profile rape case and has never met the lawyer. The certificate scandal stems from claims that Gambo’s name does not appear on the official list of lawyers called to the Nigerian Bar. Media outlets have urged the Nigerian Bar Association to investigate possible discrepancies in his academic records and professional registration. Gambo denies the allegations and insists he is duly qualified and called to the bar. Press freedom advocates are calling for an independent probe to protect journalists and uphold the integrity of the legal profession. Both parties have been encouraged to seek redress through the courts, and the Nigerian Bar Association has yet to comment on the dispute.

It's interesting how those messages echo intimidation tactics we've seen before, yet no clear response from the bar association surfaced so far.

Has the bar group given any hint of action yet, or they still dey quiet on this threat?

I'm not convinced threats alone prove guilt; journalist fit misinterpret routine follow-ups as more sinister than intended.

Media outlets should document every message, report threats promptly to authorities and consider legal protection options for journalists under pressure.
