The Golden Rule, Self-Defence and Justice Beyond Matthew 7:12
I believe the Golden Rule in Matthew 7:12 and Luke 6:31 should not be interpreted as a call to accept abuse or injustice. Treating others well matters, but so does setting boundaries and defending oneself through fair and lawful means. In my view, no single religious text should be treated as the only source of truth or justice. Different faiths and teachers have offered moral guidance, and blind loyalty to religion, tribe, ethnicity or status can encourage unhealthy feelings of superiority. I also question some traditional religious interpretations and believe translations can reflect human limitations. Forgiveness should not mean becoming a spiritual doormat. We should pursue justice responsibly while refusing to harm others in ways we would not accept ourselves.
