Kenyans Protest US-Backed Ebola Quarantine Plan at Nanyuki Airbase
Hundreds of residents in Nanyuki, central Kenya, have taken to the streets to protest a proposed US-backed Ebola quarantine centre at the Laikipia airbase. The High Court recently ordered the plan suspended amid safety and transparency concerns. Organisers say locals live alongside military personnel at the base and fear that housing asymptomatic cases could expose the community to the virus. Demonstrators blew whistles, burned barricades and demanded the facility be removed by June 9. US officials say they will fund a 50-bed unit for those exposed to Ebola and have pledged $13.5m towards Kenya’s preparedness. The health minister maintains the centre would serve everyone, but protesters remain unconvinced and insist it must go.
