Rubio: Iran’s New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei Is Alive and Engaging
US Senator Marco Rubio told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, survived US-Israeli strikes and has begun to play a more active public role. Rubio said he still hopes for a deal to end the three-month war in the Middle East. He insisted Iran must curb its nuclear programme, clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz and formally reopen the key shipping route before any sanctions relief. The senator warned Tehran must accept long-term limits on uranium enrichment. If Iran halts its most sensitive nuclear activities, he said, sanctions relief could follow.
