Igbo Exclusion from 2027 Presidency: Why Nigeria Faces a New Civil Crisis
Nigeria stands at a dangerous crossroads. Denying the Igbo people the presidency in 2027 risks reigniting the wounds of the 1967–1970 Biafra War and pushing the country toward a fresh conflict. Despite their economic impact — controlling over 60% of informal trade, leading in literacy rates, and sending billions in remittances — the South East has never produced a democratically elected president. Rotational zoning has favored other regions for decades, fueling a sense of marginalization that drives separatist movements like IPOB and MASSOB. A failure to honor zoning in 2027 could radicalize disillusioned youth and trigger armed insurrection. If equity and national unity still matter, Nigeria must include every major ethnic group at the highest level. It is time for the Igbo to take their rightful turn.
