Two Men Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Solar Street Lights in Bayelsa

Two Men Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Solar Street Lights in Bayelsa — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Two men were arrested in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, for allegedly attempting to steal solar street lights along the Bulu–Orua/Ebedebiri road in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The suspects, identified as Ayebademone Peremobowei and Peres John, reportedly came from nearby Tungbo town. A local hunter spotted them dismantling a panel, raised an alarm and alerted residents. Community members say more than 100 solar lights installed by a federal agency have gone missing, leaving roads in darkness and hampering local development. The suspects are now in custody at the Bayelsa State Police Command Headquarters in Yenagoa pending investigation and possible prosecution.

You're right, stolen solar street lights might be seen as higher value scrap and easier to move in bulk.

It's surprising that these street lights are so easy to remove, even in the early hours of the morning.

While theft is wrong, we should consider whether local authorities neglected proper maintenance or security before blaming solely on the suspects.

To prevent future incidents, communities could organize regular patrols or partner with local leaders to ensure street lights remain secure and functional.
