Supreme Court Affirms Death Sentence for Delta Kidnapper
The Supreme Court on June 5 upheld the death sentence by hanging for Chelynor Halim, a convicted kidnapper from Delta State. A five-member panel dismissed his appeal as lacking merit. In 2017, a High Court in Asaba found Halim guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping. Evidence showed he and his accomplices abducted Joan Osemene in Ibusa on February 9, 2014. They threatened her with a gun, used a cloth to sedate her, and robbed her of cash and an ATM card. The victim later escaped and flagged down a motorcyclist, who turned out to be Halim. Bystanders seized him and handed him over to the Department of State Services. A raid on the gang’s hideout ended in a shootout that killed their leader. Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme ruled there was no doubt about Halim’s presence at the crime scene. The judgment comes amid a recent surge in school abductions in Oyo and Borno States.
