NDPC Probes UNILAG, Lotus Bank Over Alleged Student Data Misuse

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission has opened a forensic investigation into the University of Lagos, Lotus Bank and Hackerbella Ltd over allegations that students’ personal information was used to open bank accounts without a lawful basis. The commission says it will examine how the data was collected, shared and used, as well as the responsibilities of each organisation involved. The probe will assess compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. Investigators will review privacy notices, data-sharing arrangements, retention policies, security safeguards and any automated profiling or credit-scoring activities. The NDPC has also urged educational institutions to comply with existing data-protection directives.
