China and Russia Veto UN Resolution on Strait of Hormuz

China and Russia Veto UN Resolution on Strait of Hormuz

The UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz after Russia and China cast their vetoes. Of the 15 members, 11 voted in favour and two abstained, but the veto power of the two permanent members blocked the measure. The original draft invoked Article 7 to allow force to keep the waterway open. After lengthy negotiations, the text was softened to encourage defensive coordination rather than offensive action. Despite these changes, Russia and China argued the resolution was too harsh on Iran and chose to reject it. The outcome highlights the deep divisions in the Security Council and reaffirms Moscow and Beijing’s support for Tehran’s position.

It's surprising that two permanent members blocked a resolution supported by 11 votes, leaving maritime safety concerns unresolved.

I'm not convinced this veto is purely about security; geopolitical rivalries seem to overshadow the UN's stated priorities.

Member states should explore alternative forums for maritime safety discussions to fill the gap left by the Security Council's deadlock.
