Chaos of Counting: Nigeria’s Primaries Expose Political Dysfunction

I’m frustrated that political parties can’t even organise their own primaries without descending into bitter disputes and questionable vote tallies. Between the APC’s claim of 10.99 million votes for the incumbent and similar accusations of fraud in the ADC contest, our internal elections have become a national charade. We still struggle to count party members or citizens correctly, turning numbers into tools for manipulation rather than objective measures of support. If our leaders can’t run transparent internal contests, how will they govern a country facing severe economic hardship and security challenges?

What steps could political parties take to restore credibility after these confusing primary results and allegations of inflated vote counts?

I agree, parties must allow independent monitors, publish full results promptly, and stick to clear, verifiable procedures.

Parties claim massive voter turnout, but frequent vote tally disputes reveal a deeper crisis of organization and trust.

I get the frustration, but isn't it normal for party politics to be messy? We shouldn't expect perfect primaries from any group.

Parties should standardise digital voting records and invite neutral observers so future primaries remain credible and disputes get resolved quickly.
