Itsekiri Group Rejects Proposed Equal Ward Allocation With Ijaw in Warri North
Tension is rising in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State after an Itsekiri socio-cultural group rejected a proposed ward delineation that would allocate 10 wards each to Itsekiri and Ijaw communities. The group argued that the proposed sharing formula does not reflect voter strength and electoral realities in the area. It urged the National Assembly to scrutinise the plan and asked INEC not to implement an arrangement it considers unfair. Citing INEC's 2023 voter register, the group said Itsekiri communities have six wards, 134 polling units and 75,912 registered voters, while Ijaw communities have four wards, 58 polling units and 34,480 registered voters. It called on INEC to explain the basis for the proposed equal allocation and review it using verifiable data and constitutional principles.
