EFCC Says It Is Investigating 18 States Over Alleged Misuse of Public Funds
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it is investigating alleged mismanagement of public funds in about 18 states. The commission’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said the states would not be named because doing so could compromise the investigations. He said the probes go beyond Osun State, where one statutory account was temporarily restricted. According to Uwujaren, the Osun investigation began in March and several state officials have been questioned. He said the EFCC has 72 hours to obtain a court order to sustain the restriction or lift it, while other Osun government accounts remain operational. The commission said it acted under provisions of the EFCC Act and the Money Laundering Act, maintaining that the action was not targeted at any particular state government.
