Presidency Urges Atiku to Respect Zoning, Drop 2027 Bid
The Presidency has asked former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to shelve any plan to contest the 2027 presidential election. It says the power rotation arrangement makes it the South’s turn to produce the next president. Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, called Atiku’s renewed ambition “self-serving” and said it undermines a convention that has helped stabilise Nigeria’s democracy since 1999. Onanuga recalled that Atiku ignored zoning in 2023 and split his party, contributing to his defeat. He predicts that renewed ambition will end in “another failure.”
