Ibadan Court Dissolves 18-Year Marriage Over Cooking Dispute

A Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, dissolved the 18-year marriage of Wasiu Abdulrahim and his wife, Muibat, after claims of hot temperament and her refusal to cook. Abdulrahim told the court he endured psychological and physical trauma over the past three years and that his wife stopped cooking, even though she provided foodstuffs. Muibat admitted she ceased cooking but did not comment on other allegations. She asked for custody of all four children, fearing they might be turned against her. The court granted custody of the two boys, ages 13 and 16, to Abdulrahim, and custody of the two girls, ages nine and six, to Muibat, based on their care needs. Presiding Judge O.E. Owoseni said the divorce served the interest of peace. Both parents were directed to share responsibility for the children’s education, welfare, and access.

How could a cooking refusal and temper issues end an 18-year marriage in that Mapo Customary Court?

It seems extraordinary that a refusal to cook alone prompted such drastic legal action after so many years together.
