Favour Ofili Set to Rejoin Team Nigeria for 2026 Commonwealth Games

Favour Ofili Set to Rejoin Team Nigeria for 2026 Commonwealth Games

United States–based sprinter Favour Ofili could still compete for Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as talks continue over her inclusion. Ofili, 23, reached the 200m final at Paris 2024 and was recently at the centre of a nationality switch controversy after her request to represent Türkiye was rejected by World Athletics. Officials cited concerns over integrity and financially driven transfers. Nigerian sports authorities have moved quickly to reintegrate her. Director General Bukola Olopade confirmed ongoing consultations with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria to include Ofili in the Glasgow delegation. Despite obtaining Turkish citizenship and signing a lucrative club deal, she remains ineligible for Türkiye at major championships. Her return would strengthen Nigeria’s sprint prospects if final approval is secured.

It's interesting that talks are ongoing after her nationality switch controversy, but there's no guarantee she'll actually make the team.

Focusing too much on foreign-based sprinters risks overshadowing homegrown talent who deserve more support ahead of 2026.
