Iran FA President: Held Three Hours in Canada, Cleared but Opted to Leave

Mehdi Taj said Canadian authorities questioned him and his delegation for three hours at Toronto airport over alleged links to Iran’s IRGC. He added that they were eventually cleared to enter the country but chose to return home voluntarily. The delegation was in Canada for the FIFA Congress in Vancouver. Taj described the questioning as unnecessary and stressed that they were not formally deported. He also accused FIFA leadership of bowing to political pressure and urged further talks to prevent similar complications ahead of the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.
