Sheriff Says North Won’t Back Atiku in 2027, Stresses South Deserves Next Turn
Ali Modu Sheriff, former governor of Borno State, argues that the North should respect Nigeria’s power-rotation principle following Muhammadu Buhari’s two terms and support a Southern candidate in 2027. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sheriff told viewers that Northern leaders have no reason to field a presidential candidate in the next contest. He urged Atiku Abubakar to hold off his ambitions until 2031. Sheriff traced the power-sharing arrangement back to post–civil war efforts to foster national unity and fairness among regions. He warned against upsetting that balance by pushing Northern interests too soon. He also dismissed Peter Obi’s prospective 2027 run under the Nigeria Democratic Congress, claiming Obi’s tenure as Anambra governor harmed his appeal in the North and that some Northern supporters remain skeptical of any alliance with him.
