EFCC Alleges Forged Buhari and Mustapha Signatures in $6.2m CBN Funds Scam

EFCC Alleges Forged Buhari and Mustapha Signatures in $6.2m CBN Funds Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission told the FCT High Court that signatures of late President Muhammadu Buhari and former SGF Boss Mustapha were forged to move $6.23 million from the Central Bank under the guise of election observer funding. Former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele faces a 20-count charge including criminal breach of trust, forgery and abuse of office. EFCC witness Chinedu Eneanya said forensic tests confirmed the forged signatures and that five CBN officials signed the memo authorising the payment. Under cross-examination, the witness admitted no forensic analysis was done on Emefiele’s signature after the ex-governor claimed his signature was also forged. The other five officers were suspended but have not been charged. Emefiele’s lawyer asked the court to foreclose the EFCC’s case if its remaining witnesses did not appear by April 28. The prosecution said two more witnesses would testify. Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned the trial to April 28 and instructed the EFCC to secure its subpoenas.

The timing of this allegation, right after the former CBN governor's term ended, raises questions about possible political motivations.

I'm not convinced that moving funds for election observers automatically points to fraud without more direct evidence against individuals.

Government should introduce robust digital signature verification and regular audits to prevent similar forgery attempts in public fund disbursements.
