Amichi Union Crisis Deepens as Seven Executives Hand Over to Trustees — 1 of 4

The leadership dispute in Amichi Development Union, Nnewi South LGA of Anambra State, has intensified after seven of the union’s 11 elected executives reportedly submitted handover notes to its Registered Trustees. The dispute centres on the tenure of former President-General Cletus Udebuani. A Nnewi High Court order reportedly restrained him from acting as President-General pending the determination of a suit arising from the 2022 town-union election. However, a letter from the state commissioner was said to have sought to keep him in office until the next court date. The Trustees argue that the union’s constitution does not permit a tenure extension and have rejected a meeting notice issued in Udebuani’s name. They have scheduled their own meeting to consider the handover notes, the management of union affairs and concerns over developments at Eke Amichi Market. Stakeholders have called for a resolution guided by the court order, the union’s constitution and applicable law.
