No Aspirant Steps Forward as Labour Party Sets May 29th Presidential Primary

No Aspirant Steps Forward as Labour Party Sets May 29th Presidential Primary

The Labour Party plans to hold its presidential primary on May 29, 2027. Yet reports suggest no one has purchased the ₦50 million nomination and expression of interest forms so far. This is a sharp contrast to 2022 and 2023, when the party captured national attention. Back then, Labour Party’s surge was driven largely by Peter Obi’s influence. Since his departure, many believe the party’s momentum has faded. Today, only Governor Alex Otti of Abia State seems to carry its banner in national conversations. Veteran figures like Baba Lamidi Apapa, Julius Abure, and Arabambi have all but disappeared from the spotlight. With internal disputes and leadership crises mounting, the party faces the real possibility of entering the 2027 race without a presidential candidate.

It's odd that despite past momentum, no one has paid the ₦50 million form fee for the primary.

The Labour Party should consider reducing the fee or offering flexible payment plans to attract candidates.
