Supreme Court Clears Way for Extradition of Ex-NSPM Boss Emmanuel Okoyomon to UK

The Supreme Court has dismissed former NSPM chief Emmanuel Okoyomon’s appeal, paving the way for his extradition to the United Kingdom to face bribery charges. In a unanimous decision on June 5, a five-member panel upheld earlier orders from the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal that authorised the extradition under the London Scheme for Extradition within the Commonwealth. Justice Emmanuel Agim’s lead judgment, delivered by Justice Mohammed Idris, found Okoyomon’s arguments “bereft of merit” and chose not to award costs against him. The court agreed that Nigeria must honour its Commonwealth treaty obligations and that no miscarriage of justice arose from questions over Okoyomon’s citizenship. Okoyomon faces allegations of complicity in a bribery scheme involving officials from the Central Bank of Nigeria, NSPM, and Australia’s Securency International. His challenge to the fairness of the process was rejected at every judicial level, culminating in the apex court’s final ruling.
