Laporta: Atlético Must Accept Barça’s Bid for Unhappy Álvarez

Laporta: Atlético Must Accept Barça’s Bid for Unhappy Álvarez — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says Atlético Madrid should take advantage of the offer on the table and let striker Julián Álvarez move on this summer. Laporta argues that big clubs cannot afford to keep unhappy players and adds that Barça always makes it easy when someone wants to leave. He believes a strong bid and the player’s desire to go justify Atlético’s sale. Despite Atlético’s insistence that Álvarez is not for sale—even at €200 million—Barcelona remain keen to bolster Hansi Flick’s attack after signing Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi. “In football, if a player wants to leave, you have to make it happen,” Laporta told a leading Spanish sports outlet.

I see your point, but is it fair to call Barça's offer pure strategy? It might be more straightforward.

I'm not so sure we should praise Laporta's stance—clubs sometimes benefit from standing firm with their own players.

Atlético might maximize return by negotiating add-ons or swap deals instead of a straight cash transfer for Álvarez.
