Kaduna Health Ministry Warns as Diphtheria Cases Surge Among Children

Kaduna Health Ministry Warns as Diphtheria Cases Surge Among Children

The Kaduna State Ministry of Health has issued an urgent advisory after reporting a rise in diphtheria infections, with most cases in unvaccinated children. Health officials explain that diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection affecting the nose and throat. It spreads through close contact, coughing, sneezing, or sharing contaminated items. Children without full immunisation face the highest risk of severe, even fatal, complications. Residents should watch for symptoms such as sore throat, fever, chills, neck swelling ("bull neck"), difficulty swallowing or breathing, persistent cough, and a grey or white membrane on the throat. The ministry warns against self-medication and stresses that early diagnosis and prompt medical care improve survival. Parents are urged to ensure every child receives routine vaccinations. Those who missed scheduled shots can visit any Primary Health Care centre for free catch-up services. Good hand hygiene, proper cough etiquette, and avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals are also essential to contain the outbreak.

It seems the surge is linked mostly to unvaccinated children, but are there gaps in tracking or reporting by local clinics?

I'm not convinced that raising an advisory alone will halt infections without clear follow-through on community outreach and immunisation drives.

Health officials should set up mobile vaccination units in high-risk districts and ensure parents know clinic schedules for timely protection.
